Historical Museum of Heraklion
The Historical Museum of Crete was founded in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies with the aim of preserving and showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of Crete from the early Christian era to modern times. Of particular interest are the Byzantine icons and ecclesiastical relics, the works of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco)—the only authentic pieces of his in Crete—and the collections referring to major events such as the Cretan Revolutions and the Battle of Crete during World War II
